Aboyne Maternity Unit provides a comfortable and safe environment for those considered ‘low risk’ and those who wish to have the most normal and special birth experience possible. The Unit has a fantastic team of midwives
Studies suggest that 70% of women are low risk at their first antenatal visit and therefore suitable for midwife-led care in a community maternity unit. Of these approximately 10-20% will require medical care during pregnancy and deliver in a hospital. Overall up to 55% of women are suitable for delivery in a community maternity unit. Breastfeeding rates are also much higher for mothers who have delivered their babies in Aboyne, currently standing at 86%, compared to 45% in Aberdeen. Research has found the following facilities are what women believe are ‘most important’ in enabling them to have the type of birth they want: • Having enough space to move around • Feeling in control of their environment, for example being able to control the temperature and lighting • Private toilet facilities • A clean, homely-looking room • A family room Aboyne has large comfortable bedrooms providing a home from home atmosphere for care during delivery and the post natal period. They all have large private bathrooms to ensure privacy, comfort and personal hygiene.
There is an ongoing trial of a birth pool at present. Women have used water as pain relief during birth since the dawn of time. Birth pools allow women to have a more active birth without the need for artificial pain relief.
The sitting room is a comfortable room for both patients and visitors to relax and also has a dining area. Toys are thoughtfully provided for elder siblings and younger visitors!
The kitchen is available for patients to use at all times babies don’t always agree when it’s time for a cup of tea. Fresh fruit, fresh fruit juice, drinking water and tea and coffee are provided to sustain thirsty breastfeeding mothers.
